Family business research and publications

Among the many things that make family businesses overall stronger performers, is their distinctive culture and long term perspective. Yet, governing them is challenging, as it involves multiple dimensions of ownership, management, family, wealth and philanthropy.

Our research shows that family firms have a “sweet spot” in managing these dimensions. But it needs to be actively engineered – it does not emerge by itself. For example, family firms tend to be either under-governed, where long term planning for important processes such as succession or portfolio strategy suffer. On the other end of the spectrum, they can be governed so strictly that they are unable to bank on intrinsic family advantages, such as fast decision making and agility.
